What's in
it for me?
Walking
Buddies will enable you to meet like minded individuals in St Albans
to go walking with. Membership is free. Simply register today by
completing the on-line form. Walking is accessible to everyone and
you have the freedom to do it whenever you choose! ,Even if you only
want to go walking now and again, that is fine. You choose how often
you want to walk and then contact other members and link up with
them. There is no pressure. You can go as little or as often as you
want. You may want to find someone to walk to and from work with.
This is a good way to save on petrol and bus fares and to energise
you in the morning. Then, after a long day in the office walking home
will also help you to unwind before you get home to your family. You
can even fit walking in during the day, in your lunch hour. Just
contact other members to see if they are available to stride out
during the afternoon. It could even make you more productive at work!
If you are training for a special event and need to get in the
practice, then finding other members in your area will give you
greater access to more training opportunities in order to reach your goal.
Health Benefits
The good news
is that walking is not only fun and inexpensive, it is also probably
the most effective form of exercise you can take. The Department of
Health recommends that you do 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 times
a week. Unlike running, walking is less strenuous on your joints and
all ages and fitness levels can take part. Just put your best feet
forwards! If you cannot afford to join a gym then you can improve
your fitness levels by taking regular walks of between 20-30 minutes
at least 3 times a week. It will help tone you up and keep your heart healthy.
Walking in
groups is very sociable and is an easy way to meet new people and
create friendships. If you have recently moved to St Albans this is a
good way of meeting new people and increasing your circle of friends.
The added benefit of walking in a group, if you choose to do so, is
that it will motivate you if you find it difficult to keep your new
year's resolutions to exercise more! Regular exercise is also good at
keeping anxiety levels at bay which in the current climate cannot be underestimated.
